In India, a job search often happens on WhatsApp as much as on job portals. Recruiters share openings in groups, candidates send resumes to agency numbers, interview times are confirmed in chat, and offer details sometimes arrive the same way. That convenience comes with two risks. One is looking careless: a blank profile, a blurry photo of a resume, ten messages in a row at midnight. The other is scams, which use the same app. This guide covers simple habits that make you look professional and keep you safe.
- Set up a clear profile name and photo, and keep your resume ready as a PDF.
- Write short, complete messages and contact recruiters during working hours.
- Never pay a fee, share an OTP or join a Telegram task group for a job.
Set up your profile
When you message a recruiter, the first thing they see is your profile. Make it work for you:
- Your real full name as the profile name, not a nickname
- A clear, simple photo of your face, or no photo at all
- A neutral About line, such as 'Accountant, Surat' or 'Looking for sales jobs'
- Your number is the same one written on your resume
- Group photos, filters or cartoon images as your display picture
Keep your resume ready
Save your resume as a PDF on your phone with a clear file name, such as "Rahul-Patel-Sales-Executive.pdf". When you send it, it opens cleanly on any phone and can be forwarded to the hiring manager without problems. If you only have a paper copy, take a straight, well-lit photo of each page, but get a PDF made as soon as you can. Our guide to writing a resume that gets shortlisted can help.

Write a complete first message
Recruiters receive many messages. A single "Hi" or "Job?" usually gets ignored. Send one short, complete message with your resume attached:
"Hello, I am Priya Shah from Adajan, Surat. I saw your opening for an Accounts Executive. I have 3 years of experience in Tally and GST. My resume is attached. Thank you."
- Who you are
Name and area.
- Which job
The exact role or job post you are responding to.
- Why you fit
One line on relevant experience or skills.
- Resume attached
As a PDF, in the same message.
Timing and tone
- Message during working hours on working days. Late-night messages look careless.
- One message, not ten. Write everything in one go instead of many short messages.
- Polite and simple language. Avoid slang, excessive emojis and voice notes for the first contact; some recruiters cannot listen to audio during work.
- Reply promptly when a recruiter asks something, even if only to say you will confirm later.
Following up without annoying anyone
If you have not heard back in a few working days, one polite follow-up is fine: "Hello, I applied for the Accounts Executive role on Monday. Is the position still open?" If there is still no reply, move on and keep applying. Repeated messages, calls without permission or messages in multiple groups rarely help.
Interviews arranged on WhatsApp
When an interview is confirmed in chat, reply to confirm the date, time and address. Save the location pin. On the day, if you are delayed, message early with a realistic time. After the interview, a short thank-you message is a nice touch. Some first rounds may happen on a WhatsApp video call; treat it like any video interview, with a quiet place, good light and proper clothes.
Groups: use them carefully
Job groups can be useful, but many are full of spam and fake offers. Join only groups run by people or companies you can verify. Do not post your full resume in a public group, because it contains your phone number and other details. Respond privately to specific posts instead.
Stay safe from WhatsApp job scams
A message from an unknown number offering high pay for simple online tasks, a request to pay any registration or training fee, a request for an OTP or bank details, a link to a Telegram group for "tasks", or pressure to decide immediately. Genuine employers and agencies do not charge you for a job.
Before you share documents, check the number against the company's official website or Google listing, and call the landline if there is one. Share identity documents only at the offer or joining stage, and only with an employer you have verified. If you have been cheated, call the National Cyber Crime helpline 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in. Our guide to job scams in Gujarat has more detail.
